𝐈𝐟 𝐰𝐞 𝐚𝐥𝐥 𝐩𝐮𝐭 𝐭𝐡𝐞 𝐬𝐚𝐦𝐞 𝐰𝐨𝐫𝐤 𝐢𝐧, 𝐜𝐚𝐧 𝐰𝐞 𝐞𝐱𝐩𝐞𝐜𝐭 𝐭𝐡𝐞 𝐬𝐚𝐦𝐞 𝐫𝐞𝐬𝐮𝐥𝐭𝐬?

Undoubtedly diligence will get us places. But for those starting further back, it's more complicated. It's not unusual for people born into wealth to contribute to outdated narratives that position themselves as life's unique grafters, while everyone else just doesn't want to try. But it's not 'hard work' alone that sets them apart from everyone else, not when they already had the resources to start with. That's the dream.

We're not homogenous.

We can't overlook the intricacies on the intersection of race, class and sex. Do we expect men to say they 'work hard'? Or do they say they work smart?

Let's challenge ourselves fiercely on the idea of 'hard work' and its relationship to expectations of women, especially women of colour. I've abandoned all notions that it's rewarding. It's not enough.

I choose instead to work smart. To be strategic about the choices and areas that I apportion my energy. Strategy and work ethic are part of the same marriage - however, my goals are intentional, and the rewards are multiple.

It's not about who has it the worst. It's about recognising that those starting with less are not lacking in drive or talent. Not having the same economic opportunities is not a sign that someone hasn't tried hard enough.

Your 24-hours are not the same as the next person. We're navigating layered circumstances. But remember, your life has given you experience and qualities that some will never have. That's what you bring to the table.

Don't let these conversations derail you. Keep your focus - give it your all. Because if you don't, you will never know. It might go wrong, but it might go right. Either way, you won't have less.

You're working with your rich experiences and making the most of those everyday. That is invaluable.
